Plan mainly for drinking and cooking. Keep bottled water or filled storage containers with lids; store them cool and dark. Check taste and smell once or twice a year and change water when needed. If you are unsure water is safe, bring it to a rolling boil. Filling bottles partly and freezing them gives ice packs in a power cut—and drinking water when they melt.
